Pretreatment is a critical first step in the wet processing of silk, aimed at preparing the fabric for uniform and effective dyeing, printing, and finishing. Raw silk contains sericin, a natural protein gum that surrounds the fibroin fiber, along with residual impurities such as oil, waxes, and dirt. If not properly removed, these impurities can hinder dye uptake, cause uneven coloration, and affect the softness and sheen of the final product.
 

The degumming process is the core of silk pretreatment, where sericin is gently removed to reveal the lustrous, smooth fibroin core—which gives silk its signature shine and luxurious handfeel. This process must be carefully controlled to prevent damage to the delicate silk fibers.
